Posted workers in Sweden are increasing - what does this mean for industrial companies?

30 March 2026

The number of posted workers in Sweden continues to increase. In 2025, the number of people was nearly 75,000, according to new statistics from the Swedish Work Environment Authority. A large share of the increase can be seen in the construction and manufacturing industries, where many large projects are ongoing in parallel around the country.

The development means that more and more industrial companies need to handle postings in their daily work - from registration and permits to ensuring that requirements for the working environment, competence and responsibility in contractor chains are met. In a survey conducted by SSG, only 25 per cent of respondents say that they have very good and consistent follow-up/control of the contractors working at the site.

– When international workforce becomes a natural part of large industrial projects, complexity also increases. The companies want to have control over which contractors are working on site, that the posting is correctly registered and that everyone meets Swedish health and safety requirements," says Linn Folke, Product Manager at SSG.

Major industrial projects drive development

According to statistics, the number of postings in the manufacturing industry increased by around 3,000 people in 2025. At the same time, there are clear regional changes connected to major investments and industrial projects in different parts of the country.

As projects grow, so does the need for structured contractor management.

– For industry, it’s not just about complying with regulations. It’s also about creating transparency throughout the entire entrepreneurial chain," says Linn Folke.

Registration and regulations are the creator of new requirements

Posted employees must, among other things, be registered in the Swedish Work Environment Authority’s posting register before work in Sweden starts. The purpose is that the authorities must be able to check that working conditions and rules are followed. For industrial companies, this often involves extensive administrative work with many people involved, especially in projects where many international contractors work simultaneously.

Part of the problem is that it can be difficult for foreign contractors to do the right thing from the start. They meet new rules, routines and several authorities at the same time, which means that even serious players are at risk of making mistakes due to the complexity.

Posting - a growing issue for industry

In our survey, the respondents answered that handling and checking documentation is the most time-consuming thing in connection with maintenance outages and major projects.

– Through common ways of working and digital solutions, we at SSG can help make it easier and more efficient for the industry to handle postings and at the same time meet the requirements for being allowed to do work in Sweden. Today, there is a lot of administrative work being done in the industries, which we can simplify," says Linn Folke.
