SSG strengthens the safety culture in Sibanye-Stillwater’s Keliber lithium project

17 October 2025

At the end of 2023, Sibanye-Stillwater’s Keliber lithium project introduced SSG On site and Workflow at the construction site for the Keliber lithium refinery in Karleby. Six months later, in June 2024, the system was implemented at the construction site of the Kaustinen enrichment plant and mining area, significantly improving the safety and efficiency of the projects.

Preparations for the Kokkola site began in the summer of 2023 with a workshop, where the SSG On Site communication app was introduced and the necessary steps for implementing Workflow were completed. Within one month, the system was fully implemented and the demo phase completed. This fast and smooth rollout helped ensure seamless and safe cooperation between stakeholders, including Keliber Lithium project contractors and suppliers.

Improved safety and efficiency

The electronic work permit system has provided real-time monitoring of operations, which makes it easier to track and approve work permits. With teams working in high-risk environments, a clear real-time overview of ongoing work helps minimize risks and ensure that only authorised personnel perform the tasks. The system also identifies inefficiencies, improving workflows and helping to keep the project on track.

A partnership for continuous improvement

As the Keliber lithium project progresses, Sibanye-Stillwater continues to work with SSG to refine the electronic work permit system. This ongoing partnership ensures the company’s commitment to safety, efficiency and project success. The services provided by SSG will remain an important part of the work to achieve operational goals and maintain a safe and efficient work environment.

Facts about the lithium project

When in operation, Keliber’s lithium project will produce 15,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide monohydrate per year, making a significant contribution to Europe’s global lithium supply. The project will employ nearly 1,000 workers during the construction period, and approximately 360 when production stabilises.
