This standard can be used independently or as a complement to SSG 3271E – Shaft seals, functional procurement. The purpose of the specification is to assist in choosing additional external seals, which in everyday use are referred to as bearing protection. The function of the bearing protection is to retain the medium in the application, but also to prevent external media from penetrating and contaminating, for example, the lubricant. The bearing protection often consists of radial seals.

SSG 3272E is used by a purchaser to specify machine positions that may need bearing protection in addition to their own or the machine supplier’s standard range. The purpose is to highlight information between a purchaser and a seal supplier to achieve a reliable function. The standard can also be regarded as a support for handling spare parts or modifications.
The standard focuses on the purchaser stating the application of the desired seal within given parameters. It is then up to the seal supplier to present the best solution with one or more types of seals.
