SSG 2017E is used as a checklist in projects to ensure an acceptable level of maintainability on items in facilities. Taking maintainability into account at an early stage enables system efficiency and enables high operational reliability.
This guide considers the maintenance activities that can be carried out, regardless of practitioner.

The checklist is used to advantage in projects between the "basic design" and "detail design + procurement" phases. Another possible application is to use the guide's keywords for work order preparation.
The checklist is applicable to new or existing equipment and takes into account the impact on existing equipment in the surrounding area.

The checklist mainly controls the following parameters:
– Fault detectability – is the execution such that various faults can be detected in time so that failures can be avoided?
– Repairability – is the design such that maintenance activities can be carried out safely and efficiently?
– Supportability – is the design such that the right maintenance support is available for the required maintenance activities?

The checklist divides operation and maintenance activities into main categories, and links them to practical implementations. The checklist is advantageously used together with overall planning documents such as process diagrams, building documents or machine arrangements.
As each maintenance activity is coordinated, necessary changes can be highlighted early while good solutions can be confirmed.
