Mines are significant regional employers in Finland, but it’s also important to consider the broader perspective of neighboring countries. In the northern region, national borders to the west don’t necessarily pose barriers, as the same companies and people often operate seamlessly across Finland, Sweden, and Norway.

"Cross-border cooperation offers broader and more flexible opportunities. While companies compete with one another, extensive collaboration improves the industry’s overall conditions. A prime example is occupational safety, where collaboration, shared practices, and information sharing are more beneficial for all parties than competition," says Jaakko Antikainen, Country Director of SSG Finland.

SSG has been collaborating in Sweden for a long time with various actors in the mining industry and has already gained recognition in Finland, especially through its occupational safety training.

SSG is a member of Mining Finland, an association that promotes the export of Finnish mining technology, encourages foreign investments in the Finnish mining cluster, and facilitates R&D and education collaboration among mining sector actors working in Finland or cooperation with Finnish companies.

“Health and safety in the mining industry has significantly improved, with advancements in technology, stronger safety protocols, and enhanced training programs, all contributing to a safer work environment. These efforts have led to a reduction in accidents and improved worker protection, highlighting the positive results of ongoing commitment to safety. However, safety is a choice, thus positive safety culture and preventive actions contribute to a safe working environment on each site.” says Aleksi Salo, Board member of Mining Finland.

Lasse Kauppinen, also a Board Member of Mining Finland, adds, “Comprehensive work orientation enhances the safety culture for all parties involved. Workplace safety can also be improved through the use of modern digital tools.”

SSG aims to contribute to safer workplaces in the mining industry and hopes that membership in Mining Finland will further strengthen its contacts within the industry.

“If we can reduce accidents in mines through these efforts, everyone benefits. SSG’s goal is to help build a Nordic-wide occupational safety network and strengthen common practices, with the mining industry being one of the key sectors we have chosen to focus on,” says Jaakko Antikainen.
