SSAB Luleå was quick to respond when contacted by the service owner of SSG On Site, Markus Sjöholm, regarding the new transport routes function. SSAB Luleå has been involved as a pilot plant since mid-February 2021, and according to Robert Ridefors, security manager for the industrial site in Luleå, the function has great potential.
Robert Ridefors works as security manager for AB Företagsskydd at SSAB Luleå, and he manages the security team responsible for guarding the site. The team’s primary task is to check that those entering the site are authorized and meet the set requirements. The industrial site is 6 km long and 2.5 km wide. What is unusual about the site is that it includes a total of ten businesses, and three of them, including SSAB, are Seveso-classified.
We are a very complex area from a transport route perspective, which makes it even more important that transport on site takes place in a controlled and safe manner.
– Since we work with security and access control, SSG’s services are a natural tool for us. We have been using SSG On Site for exactly one year, and we have also been part of the user group for the service. During the first meeting, Markus Sjöholm, service owner of SSG On Site, presented the development of a function for transport routes. At that very meeting, I thought We have to be part of this, says Robert.
Work on the function has been under way since the beginning of 2020, and with the help of working groups and pilot facilities it is now ready for launch, something that Markus Sjöholm has been looking forward to.
– For the development of this function, we spoke to hundreds of people in 2020. During the actual development phase and the process, the key has been dialogue, with between 20 and 30 people from different parts of the industry participating and giving feedback. Working with such a broad group has been extremely valuable, as has the ability to jointly challenge the idea of how we work today and develop solutions for how we want to work tomorrow.”
During the work, some excellent ideas emerged for further development, from an authorization for the facility that only covers transport routes to the need for the function to apply to pedestrians who are visiting the plant—an idea that Robert believes has great potential.
– The primary benefit of the transport routes function is that our goods deliveries can get to the right place safely, but we have also found that the function can be used in even more ways. Today we have a requirement that all visitors must be collected from and returned to security because we cannot be sure that everyone will find their way safely. Since, under normal circumstances, the site welcomes around 7,000 visitors per year, a great deal of operational time is spent on signing visitors in and out at security. With the new function, our visitors can have a better experience and feel that they are adequately and safely taken care of, which will also save time and create customer benefit for our project managers and those receiving visitors, says Robert.
The service is now available for all existing and new SSG On site customers. We are continuing to receive feedback from our customers and working to take it all on board so we can make the function even better at the next update.
– The experience of the transport routes function has been very positive, and customers are constantly sending us lots of thoughts and ideas on how we can further develop the function so it can be of even more benefit to the industry. A Seveso-classified facility is one that handles hazardous substances in quantities that reach a specified limit and can therefore pose special risks to local residents in the event of a fire or other accident. More information.
